Katya's Book of Mushrooms
Katya's Book of Mushrooms

by Katya Arnold, Sam Swope

From School Library Journal:
'Gr 5-8In this oversized title, brightly colored artwork and a cheerful, anecdotal text introduce a variety of wild mushrooms while describing Arnold's childhood experiences in Russia gathering and eating them. Mushrooms are defined, specific types are identified, and much information and folklore are added. The idiosyncratic illustrations lend a humorous if slightly chaotic touch. The text includes many caveats (beginning on the endpapers) against eating mushrooms you cannot positively identify as safe, suggesting the use of field guides and expert advice. However, she waxes so lyrical in her descriptions of mushroom tastes and smells that readers of all ages will want to join the hunt. This unique and appealing book should be approached with caution and guidance from knowledgeable adults, as should all wild mushrooms.'

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books:
'This is an unusual and involving book. . . . Arnold's linocuts combine bold colors with black outlines for a dramatic visual presentation of our fungalfriends. Each colorful double-page spread is filled with mushrooms, all withidentifying captions, and includes some small anecdote about Arnold's relationship with each one.'
