African Spirits Speak
A White Woman's Journey into the Healing Tradition of the Sangoma
by Nicky Arden
The moving story of an expatriate coming to terms with her country's history, and her joyous spiritual and emotional rebirth as an African healer.
One of the first accounts of the mysterious sangomas, the healers of South Africa's black population, set against the stirring backdrop of a crumbling apartheid regime. African Spirits Speak is the lyrical account of white South African Nicky Arden's journey into the world of the sangomas, the diviners, doctors, psychologists, and priests of South Africa's black population.  While in her early twenties Nicky fled South Africa with her husband as the stranglehold of apartheid tightened on her native land. For twenty-two years they lived in California as expatriates--never once returning to their homeland--until a deep depression, followed by a spiritual awakening in the California desert, compelled Nicky to return to South Africa. During her visit, while exploring deep in the bush, she unexpectedly met an old black medicine woman--a sangoma. This meeting would change her life. Few white South Africans are even aware of the world of the sangomas, but this prophetic old woman saw in Nicky the spirit of a fellow healer and set the author on a mystical journey that would reunite her soul with its African roots. Thus began her astonishing and complex initiation into a nearly unknown world and her quest to discover the truth about herself and her heritage.
Nicky Arden is the former director of San Diego Youth and Community Services, a social service agency. She and her husband divide their time between San Diego, California, and Johannesburg, South Africa.
"A fascinating account of [the author's] search for acceptance by a tribal community. . . . Highly recommended for collections on social sciences, women's studies, and spirituality."
Library Journal
"A strong and unusually concrete spiritual memoir."
Kirkus Reviews
"African Spirits Speak is a poignant initiatory dive into the self. . . .Nicky Arden brings courage and wisdom back from her journeys to share with us all.  The clear bell that she rings is truly a gift."

The Body of Myth
Mythology, Shamanic Trance, and the Sacred Geography of the Body
J. Nigro Sansonese
From Library Journal:
"Much like a musical composition by Claude Debussy, this is an impressionistic book, full of mythological and physiological allusions that affect the reader with "Eureka''-type discoveries. The book's organization is unorthodox, yet it succeeds in convincing the reader that there is definitely a physical connection between the human body and mythologies. Sansonese, who has practiced raja yoga for years and here shows how yoga can be used as an effective means of attaining a deeper self-consciousness, reveals himself to be a natural successor to Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung. Readers in public and academic libraries who appreciate and delight in the juxtaposition of science and religion, East and West, will especially enjoy this esoteric volume."-Gary P. Chamalu
The Shamanic Way of the Heart
Traditional Teachings from the Andes
Luis Espinoza

Chamalu tells the story of a young woman's initiation into Andean wisdom traditions under the guidance of Chamalu, a Quechua shaman. The sacred way of the heart, he tells her, is a spiritual journey that must be undergone by anyone who aspires to be a Wanderer--a person who transcends illusion and embraces primal reality, unmediated by religious doctrine or intellectual constructs. The woman asks him to show her how to release herself from the emotional pain that paralyzes her, and gradually, over a series of meetings, Chamau reveals to her the secret of reconnecting with the spirits of the ancestors and of Pachamama, Mother Earth.  Presented as a series of conversations, Chamalu is simply told in language that appeals directly to the heart, Chamalu allows the reader to experience Andean shamanic teachings based on the ancient Inca heritage of wisdom, inner power, simplicity, and joy.
Luis Espinoza (Chamalu) is a Bolivian Quechua shaman who has brought the traditional teachings of the Andes to modern-day apprentices in Spain, France, and the United States. Since 1993 he has directed Janajpacha, a spiritual center in the Cochabamba Valley in central Bolivia.
"Mystic seekers may find this book refreshingly clear and exuberant.  The unintimidated may find it both too general and too exultant.  Doubtless it will find a place in specialty bookstores or collections, as part of the multicultural spiritual experience."  Linda Vavra, American Bookseller

Circle of Shaman
Healing through Ecstasy, Rhythm, and Myth
Karen Berggren
Circle of Shaman focuses on the shamanic flight of ecstasy-the core experience that distinguishes shamanism from other spiritual and healing practices-and how it enables the psyche to heal itself of dysfunctional patterns, allowing the Self to evolve. Based on her own experiences, Karen Berggren explores the development of rhythmic empathy to engage the ecstatic experience.
Karen Berggren's CIRCLE OF SHAMAN is a wonderful gift that will be adored by everyone interested in shamanic experience. This is her personal story of entering the world of the shaman and how her journey takes us into the heart of ecstatic experience. Today's growing interest in shamanism has led to an acknowledgement of the power of imaginal realms, the space where archetypal presences grace us in visionary encounter. In our drumming and calling forth of totemic relations, we have been re-shown old ways of healing. Yet, in spite of this contemporary revival of the shamanic way, something of vital importance has been left out and kept in the dark. We have forgotten that the heart of shamanism is nothing less than unfettered ecstatic experience and this is what Karen Berggren awakens us to remember. The word, "shaman," originally referred to the excited, often shaking of the body of a person filled with life's spirit. As an old Micmac medicine man once told me, "No shake, no shaman." To enter the heart of shamanism is to enter the core of ecstatic experience. Karen Berggren fully understands this and her exciting text, which weaves inspiring prose, narrative, and academic research, brings a much needed healing to the over-sober scene in contemporary shamanism.
Karen Berggren is a writer, musician, and performer who has been involved in spirit work and mediumship since 1975. In 1989 she was unexpectedly initiated into the path of shamanism. She gives lectures and workshops on shamanism and the healing power of drumming, dance, and rhythm. She is also cofounder of Theater of the Spirit, an experimental theater company that explores mythic and shamanic themes. She currently lives in Acton, Massachusetts.
"Karen Berggren’s Circle of Shaman is a wonderful gift that will be adored by everyone interested in shamanic experience . . . her exciting text, which weaves inspiring prose, narrative, and academic research, brings a much needed healing to the too-sober scene in contemporary shamanism."

Compass of the Heart

Embodying Medicine Wheel Teachings
Loren Cruden
Arranged in the form of a medicine wheel, Compass of the Heart uses the teachings of the six directions - East, South, West, North, Sky, and Earth - as it explores what it means to be consciously engaged in the life that swirls around us each and every moment. Cruden discusses daily spiritual practices-meditation, work with chakras, even teaching children or gardening-as ways of maintaining a connectedness to truth through the ups and downs of experience. These practices deepen one's relationship with the Earth so that spiritual awareness occurs not just in rare moments of inspiration but as an integral and ongoing part of life itself. More than a guide, this is the perfect companion to those following the compass of their hearts toward a union of body, earth, and spirit.
For those who feel a desire for a natural spirituality in their lives, Compass of the Heart offers insights and suggestions based on Loren Cruden's lifetime of work with Native American and other Earth-oriented traditions. Further develops the ideas and practices set forth in the author's previous work, The Spirit of Place.
Loren Cruden, a midwife and herbal healer, leads shamanic workshops in the Pacific Northwest. She is the author of The Living Earth Tarot Deck, The Spirit of Place, and Coyote's Council Fire. She lives in Washington State.

Conscious Conception
Elemental Journey Through the Labryinth of Sexuality
by Jeannine Parvati Baker, Tamara Slayton, Frederick Baker
Conscious Conception is the comprehensive reference for fertility awareness. All natural methods of family planning, both ancient and current, are presented within the larger context of sexuality and an evolving spirituality, which embraces the religious wisdom traditions and goes beyond.
The book is for anyone who wants to prepare before conception for the great journey as partners in creation: commonly known as becoming PARENTS. Couples who are labelled "infertile" will discover new possibilities and ways to naturally conceive. This book is also for anyone exploring fertile sexuality and desires a way to avoid contraception and pregancy both at once. The information is shared with the hope that every baby can be a welcomed baby AND strengthen sexual relationships. Rather than rely upon medical device, chemicals or surgeries, the invitation of Conscious Conception is to experience fertility as not in the way of sexuality, but rather, that fertile sexuality is THE way of spirituality.
Jeannine Parvati Baker us the author of Hygieia: A Woman's Herbal. The authors boldly guide us through such real issues as abortion, adoption and choosing the gender and birth time of our babies yet always within a larger story of SOUL ~ myth, metaphor and our evolution of ideas about sexuality and by extension, creation. One prevailing concept in Conscious Conception is that we can put to rest the "victim-of-fertility" archetype which has been at best the inspiration of great literature/tragedy for millennia, and at worst has released much pain and suffering upon our Earth. We can become conscious of our capacity to co-create ~ as simple as knowing when one is hungry or thristy, we can know when we are fertile and act in ways which are best-for-life.
This natural knowing is aided by attention to not only our physical bodies and fertility cycles, but our dreams and desires. What is emerging at the end of this millennium is the realization that fertility awareness is a SOURCE experience, one which puts us in direct relationship with creative energy. By becoming conscious of our fertility, we become more creative.
Included are detailed ceremonies for healing previous abortions, both public and private rituals to resolve the past and be more present in the unfolding fertility story now. Abortion is not moralized as being "wrong" ~ rather, it just hurts and is increasingly unneccessary as the practice of Conscious Conception/ Fertility Awareness is spread throughout the world. Again, contraception is deconstructed to show its inevitable failure while in contrast, when cyclical abstinance is employed, there are no conceptions.
Plus the world's best kept secret ~ fertility awareness inclusive of abstinance, enhances a long-term monogamous relationship in many ways that usage of contraception cannot. It also is optimal in short-term relationships as the practicioners need fear no untimely pregnancy.
What would the world look like if every baby was a wanted, welcomed baby? If women knew ourselves and honestly communicated our truth in regards to fertility to our lovers? What if teens learned fertility awareness, which embraces the best of all ideas about sex education, and developed a real self to esteem? Conscious Conception describes such a world ~ a world of the POSSIBLE FAMILY. Freebirth, waterbirth, total breastfeeding, the family bed and attachment mothering are shared amongst many other topics as extensions of the optimal beginning in life ~ conscious conception between passionate partners with life.
It sounds simple ~ by knowing when we are fertile, we can still express sexual love yet not conceive babies merely by not having seminal intercourse. Women are usually fertile for 1/3, 1/4 or 1/5th of the monthly cycle. During this phase of fertility, sexuality can be deepened by exploring many ways to ecstasy exclusive of intercourse. There is a courtship/ honeymoon rhythm each month which cultivates desire and passion. Plus, the dilemma of an unwanted pregnancy needn't interfere with the on-going deepening of trust between lovers. Conscious Conception explores why, when and how to practice effective fertility awareness, whether you want a baby or not ~ and to its credit, expands the mysteries of life as it does. This is an exploration of the labryinth of sexuality, where conception is a fractal of birth, and the doorway to many dimensions of existence, pre-existence and post-existence in the great round of being.

The Cosmic Serpent
DNA and the Origins of Knowledge
Jeremy Narby
For ten years, Jeremy Narby explored the Amazonian rain forests, the libraries of Europe, and some of the world's most arcane scientific journals. He followed strange clues, unsuppressible intuitions, and extraordinary coincidences. He collected evidence and researched the seemingly impossible possibility that specific knowledge might somehow be transferred through DNA, the genetic information at the heart of every cell of every living thing, to a specially prepared consciousness. Narby demonstrates that indigenous and ancient peoples have known for millennia - and have even drawn - the double helix structure, something Western science discovered only in 1953. He also suggests that DNA and the life it codes for at the cellular level are "minded."
"The Cosmic Serpent is a spellbinding, scholarly tour de force that may presage a major paradigm shift in the Western view of reality." --Michael Harner, Ph.D., president, Foundation for Shamanic Studies, and author of The Way of the Shaman

Cosmos, Self, and History in Baniwa Religion
For Those Unborn
Robin M. Wright
The Baniwa Indians of the Northwest Amazon (a frontier region on the borders of Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia) have engaged in millenarian movements since at least the middle of the nineteenth century. The defining characteristic of these movements is usually a prophecy of the end of this present world and the restoration of the primordial, utopian world of creation. This prophetic message, delivered by powerful shamans, has its roots in Baniwa myths of origin and creation. In this ethnography of Baniwa religion, Robin M. Wright explores the myths of creation and how they have been embodied in religious movements and social action - particularly in a widespread conversion to evangelical Christianity. This research sheds new light on millenarian, messianic, and prophetic movements in native South America. The book contributes to current theoretical discussions in anthropology on the links between myth, social action, and history. And it adds important new material to studies of the relations among native religions and Christianity.

Dreamgates
An Explorer's Guide to the Worlds of Soul, Imagination, and Life Beyond Death
Shamanic practitioner, dream explorer, and author of Conscious Dreaming, Robert Moss provides exciting, new conscious dreamwork techniques that can launch readers into other worlds and the furthest reaches of their imaginations. Insisting that we are each born with the ability to experience different ways of seeing and knowing, Moss (Conscious Dreaming) invites readers through the portals of "the twilight zone - the cusp between waking and sleeping, and between sleeping and waking." Beyond this entrance to the dreamworld, according to Moss, dreamers encounter spirit guides, experience physical and emotional healings, see and create their own futures and are given answers to specific questions. Teaching his method of "active dreaming," he provides many provocative individual and group exercises, including breathing, drumming and a variety of visualization techniques. According to Moss, the ultimate purpose of reconnecting dreaming and conscious states is "soul remembering," the revelation of where we came from before birth and where we will go after death, illuminating whatever lies in between with new meaning.

Dreamtime and Inner Space
The World of the Shaman
Holger Kalweit, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (Designer)
A shaman-according to the classic definition given by Mircea Eliade-is a man or woman who makes spiritual "journeys" in an altered state of consciousness in order to heal the sick, divine the future, or contact the spirits of the dead. In this book Holger Kalweit has collected the first- person accounts of tribal shamans from Africa, Siberia, and the Americas, describing their paranormal experiences and visions as well as their rituals, healing techniques, and spiritual disciplines. Out-of-body journeys, spirit weddings, the use of sacred drugs, descent to the underworld, healing with crystals, and acquiring animal allies are just some of the experiences surveyed. How a person becomes a shaman and what psychic stages of development he or she passes through are also discussed. By drawing parallels with the findings of modern research into altered states of consciousness, the author demonstrates that shamans are important "astronauts of inner space" who have valuable knowledge to contribute to our understanding of the universe and of our human potential.

The Eagle's Quest
A Physicist's Search for Truth in the Heart of the Shamanic World
Fren Alan Wolf
An acclaimed physicist takes us on a fascinating journey as he examines shamanism in the light of modern science.
"Breaks down barriers between modern science and a mystical worldview."--Publishers Weekly.
Journeying through the shamanistic world, from the Himalayas to the jungles of Peru, Fred Alan Wolf encountered strange phenomena--natural healing, firewalking, shape-shifting, near-death and out-of-body experiences, visions of the past and future, time traveling, and lucid dreaming-that seemingly could not be reconciled with his training as a theoretical physicist.
Wolf shows how the concepts of the New Physics--the "observer effect," parallel universes, the uncertainty principle, and the "holographic universe"--can illuminate the mysteries of shamanism, and vice versa. A surprising exploration of the links between the natural and the supernatural, The Eagle's Quest is an inspiring intellectual and spiritual odyssey.
 From Publisher's Weekly:
Personal odysseys through shamanic rites lead Wolf to posit links between the Shaman's experience and the ``new physics.'' A captivating, lucid quest for awareness. Wolf is the author of the American Book Award-winning Taking the Quantum Leap.

Experiencing Ritual
A New Interpretation of African Healing
by Edith Turner, Singleton Kahona, William Blodgett
The scene is Zambia in 1985. A patient has been invaded by the tooth of a dead hunter, a spirit object which causes her much pain. Only a drum ritual can cure it.

The company starts to sing and drum, and when at last the dramatic climax breaks, the anthropologist sees a six-inch blob--a kind of plasma or gray spherical ghost--emerging from the patient's back.   Experiencing Ritual is Edith Turner's account of how she sighted a spirit form while participating in the Ihamba ritual of the Ndembu. Turner's experience with the Ndembu is extensive; from 1951 to 1954 she and her husband, the preeminent anthropologist Victor Turner, conducted fieldwork among them. This fieldwork formed the basis for Victor Turner's highly influential work, The Drums of Affliction. In that study, Victor Turner analyzed the Ihamba in terms of its social and psychological functions, but dismissed the Ndembu view that the real context of the Ihamba is spiritual. When Edith Turner returned to the Ndembu in 1985, she learned what she and Victor did not learn during their early fieldwork--how to understand the Ihamba in Ndembu terms. Through her richly detailed analysis of the ritual and her willingness to make the spirit central to her analysis, she presents a view not common in anthropological writings--the view of millions of Africans--that ritual is the harnessing of spiritual power. This provocative and challenging work will be of interest to students and scholars of anthropology, African studies, and religious studies.

The Flowers of Wiricuta
A Journey to Shamanic Power with the Huichol Indians of Mexico
by Tom Pinkson, Ph.D
The Flowers of Wiricuta is the gripping autobiographical account of Tom Pinkson’s decade-long immersion in the shamanic traditions of the Huichol tribe of north central Mexico, who have retained their ancient way of life more thoroughly than other indigenous groups, and are known primarily for the use of peyote in their spiritual traditions. Pinkson has successfully integrated their teachings into his work with terminally ill children and their families. His book is a heart-felt record of a personal search for a clearer understanding of the true self.
Tom Soloway Pinkson, Ph.D., is a practicing psychologist, consultant, teacher, public speaker and high-performance coach to business executives and health professionals. He lives in San Rafael, California.

Forest of Visions
Ayahuasca, Amazonian Spirituality, and the Santo Daime Tradition
by Alex Polari de Alverga
The story of Santo Daime--a new religion that blends elements of  Christianity with older Amazonian indigenous spiritual practices--and the ecologically sound and spiritually centered utopian community it has inspired.
Edited and Introduced by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman's Doorway
A true story of a classical spiritual encounter, as well as an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition that continues to grow worldwide.  Alex Polari de Alverga spent years as a political prisoner during the rule of the military junta in Brazil, enduring torture, brutality, and deprivation. On his release from captivity and in search of something to restore his spiritual connection to life, he had a transformative encounter with one of the two revered founders of Santo Daime, Padrinho Sebastiao Mota de Mela. Santo Daime--an Amazonian religion, born out of jungle entheogens, mediumship, and healing, that is a potent and unique synthesis of Christianity and indigenous practices--provided Alverga with an alternative to his disillusionment with modern society. His quest for spiritual initiation eventually led him deep into the heart of the rainforest to Mapia, one of the spiritual centers of Santo Daime, where he became a teacher and leader of the Daime community.
Forest of Visions is a story of a classic spiritual encounter comparable to the Tibetan Saint Milarepa's search for his teacher Marpa. It is also an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition that from modest beginnings in Brazil has now spread throughout the world and continues to grow. It provides an inside look at the spiritually centered village of Mapia, a model for communities in the 21st century.

From the Realm of the Ancestors
An Anthology in Honor of Marija Gimbutas
by Joan Marler (Editor)
Born in Lithuania, Marija Gimbutas was a national heroine even before her death in 1994. A classically trained archaeologist, Dr. Gimbutas was also a linguist, mythologist and folklorist who possessed the vision of an artist and the broad understanding of a philosopher.
Widely respected as a world-class expert on Baltic and Slavic prehistory and the Indo-European Bronze Age, she devoted the last thirty years of her life to exploring and interpreting the earlier Neolithic cultures of Europe.  This seminal archaeologist's unearthing of the goddess-based, matrilineal society that preceded the patriarchal Indo-European culture has been widely recognized as ground-breaking, initiating a new perception of European prehistory that challenges traditional assumptions about the origins of Western civilization. In this splendid collection, an international group of scholars, artists and writers articulate their deep respect for Marija Gimbutas as they acknowledge the contributions she has made to their own work.
From the Realm of the Ancestors features a brilliant and profound collection of essays by scholars from various disciplines - in Australia, Canada, the United States, Eastern and Western Europe - who acknowledge the significance of Dr. Gimbutas' scholarship. The book is divided into three sectons:
PART ONE: REMEMBERING A GREAT WOMAN OF SCIENCE
PART TWO: DEEPENING THE DISCIPLINES
I. ARCHAEOLOGY, II. Genetics, Linguistics, Indo-European Studies, III. ARCHAEOMYTHOLOGY, IV. MYTHOLOGY/FOLKLORE,
PART THREE: EXPANDING THE VISION
I. AN EMERGING PARADIGM, II. THE ARTISTIC VISION, III. THE SYMBOLISM OF AN EARTH-BASED SPIRITUALITY, IV. THE POETIC VOICE, V. THE INTERIOR REALM

Hallucinogens & Shamanism
by Michael J. Harner
In this unusual collection, ten original studies explore the use of hallucinogens in shamanism: the ancient and widespread practice of invoking a trance state to perceive and manipulate supernatural forces. The research ranges from the aboriginal tribes of the Upper Amazon to cultures undergoing Westernization, such as the Apaches of the Southwestern United States; from the myth enshrouded cults of medieval witchcraft to a modern laboratory experiment.  Dr. Furst demonstrates with a wealth of cross-cultural and historical data and some of his own first hand experiences the often decisive role hallucinogens have played and continue to play in the world today.

Healing The Shadow
Ross Bishop
Santa Fe shaman, Ross Bishop, offers a unique perspective on self-healing and therapy.
Ten years in the making and based on twenty years of healing experience, Shadow provides readers with the tools and resources to manifest positive change in their lives. For 40,00 years shaman have been teaching people about the forces of the shadow and how to deal with them. Healing The Shadow renders those ancient concepts into a form that can both be understood and used in the modern Western world.  Shadow explains the origins of our stifled passion and how the fear created by the shadow affects everything we do. In addition to explaining these limiting forces, the book offers practices to help each individual move through their self-limiting beliefs and fears. Most notable of these is a presentation, for the first time in print, of the ancient shamanic practice of "soul retrieval," adapted to fit the needs of modern society.
Healing The Shadow is a transforming and life enhancing book. It is one of the best guides to understanding and transforming life you will ever read. As one reader says, "it is not for those simply looking for a comfortable new age read, for it ultimately demands putting the book down and actually doing the work. If you are serious about moving forward with your life, however, this book will become a treasured dog-eared ally."

Initiation
A Woman's Spiritual Adventure in the Heart of the Andes
by Elizabeth B. Jenkins
In 1989, Elizabeth Jenkins was living in San Francisco, working on a doctorate in clinical psychology. Her life seemed full...but she felt empty. Then she traveled to Peru, intending to research Andean healing practices--and found herself taking an unexpected journey, with the guidance of an initiated priest of the Andean Path.  This is her story, filled with compelling details of her own initiation in the beautiful but harsh setting of the high Andes--and how the voyage has changed her life.
From Library Journal: "Jenkins writes about her visit to the Andean village of Cuzco, Peru, while studying for her Ph.D. in psychology. Her spiritual experiences there were so compelling and profound that she returned home to San Francisco, sold everything, and went back there to live. Over the course of eight years, she traveled back and forth, studying and participating in the shamanic practices of the ancient Inca traditions. Her experiences are exciting, portrayed here with a great deal of honor and respect, and her writing is compelling. The result is a fine addition to the growing genre exploring indigenous spirituality."

Journeying
Where Shamanism and Psychology Meet
Jeannette M. Gagan, Ph.D.
Journeying not only shows the commonalities shared by shamanism and psychology, but expands on inherent healing possibilities when their forces are joined.
This book offers informed insight as to how the practice of journeying weaves into the psychological perspective, as well as providing those who know little about shamanism an enlightened view. Journeying is the term used to describe a shaman's movement into an altered state of consciousness to obtain healing information. Psychology, like shamanism, works to alleviate human suffering and makes use of altered states in a variety of ways including guided imagery and hypnosis. Shamanism, the oldest healing tradition known to humankind, springs from natural, intuitive, and spiritual sources. Psychology, a relative newcomer on the Western scene, relies on logic and science.
In bringing these two healing disciplines together, the author illustrates how variations on the practice of journeying strengthens the psychological process. The true heart of this book rests in the application of journeying to the healing of emotional wounds--wounds that occur when parents are unable to sufficiently bond with their infants. In such healing journeys shamanic power animals and spirit helpers provide nurturing not previously experienced, softening edges of neediness and desperation that sometimes feed adolescent and adult aggression. Journeying beats a fast-paced path to the alchemy of psychological transformation in words easily understood by practitioners and lay persons alike. "Here is an author who clearly knows her subject. Gagan's book is nothing short of fascinating. It doesn't ask you to reject modern psychology, only to consider augmenting the discipline with a deeper plane of consciousness." THE NEW MEXICAN

Jung and Shamanism in Dialogue
Retrieving the Soul/Retrieving the Sacred
C. Michael Smith, Ph.D.
In this highly original study, C. Michael Smith explores the affinities and distinctions between shamanism and Jungian psychology by bringing them together in dialogue. According to Smith, shamanism is considered to be a complex of practices of magico-religious character concerned primarily with psycho-spiritual and psychosomatic healing. Smith systematically examines shamanism from a Jungian perspective, and Jungian psychology from a shamanic perspective, ultimately reflecting on the clinical and cultural implications of this study on psychotherapy and spirituality today. Jung and Shamanism in Dialogue makes an excellent resource for anyone interested in tapping into psycho-spiritual wisdom.

Mystic Encounters on the Shaman's Path
Henry Barnard Wesselman
In 1985, anthropologist Hank Wesselman began to experience disturbingly vivid altered states that ultimately propelled him on 12 fantastic journeys across time and space. He wrote about these in Spiritwalker. Now Dr. Wesselman continues his extraordinary narrative as he recounts his true adventures where he is given foreshadowings of imminent ecological, political, and spiritual challenges to the future of civilization. Dr. Wesselman learns that his journeys are much like the journeys shamans of all cultures have taken for years. But his journeys take him far into the future, past the collapse of civilization, to a "new" stone age. There he meets a Hawaiian Kahuna mystic named Nainoa who teaches the author about what the world is like after the fall of the modern age. The result is another fascinating adventure, an exciting discovery, and the story of how a hardheaded scientific realist may have stumbled on an important piece in the puzzle of human evolution.
Continuing the fantastic true story begun in "Spiritwalker", Wesselman offers the memoir of a scientist and shaman who has time-traveled 5,000 years into the future, where the modern world has disappeared and indigenous tribes are making a new way in the world.

The Possible Human
A Course in Enhancing Your Physical, Mental, and Creative Abilities
by Jean Houston
"When Dr. Jean Houston began The Foundation for Mind Research in 1965, her aim was to explore cultures in order to uncover the many ways peak human potential was defined and achieved.
After extensive research using techniques such as dream work, altered states of consciousness and biofeedback on thousands of subjects, she began to conduct workshops that focused on psychophysical (mind/body) awareness and enhancement to reach a higher level of being.  The core elements of these workshops are recreated here through essays and exercises designed to "awaken," in every sense, our physical and mental capacities, and to explore the realms of our inner space and creative processes. This is a fascinating work, both for its approach and the breadth of perspective given by the rich historical and cultural context the material is drawn from. Jean's social perceptions are remarkable, her delivery accessible and her confidence in human ability inspiring."  The Womansource Catalog & Review
In what has been called "an intellectual and spiritual feast, " acclaimed pioneer in human development Dr. Jean Houston offers readers a tour of the great and unknowable homeland of the human spirit, while introducing them to a comprehensive theory and program for conscious creativity. PRENATAL YOGA AND NATURAL BIRTH

By Jeannine Parvati Baker
Originally published in 1974, this book is a perennial favorite of pregnant women who intuit that birth is a spiritual as well as natural rite-of-passage. With the conception of the author's sixth baby, PRENATALYOGA & NATURAL BIRTH was revised and expanded in 1986 into its present form.
Translated into Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, German, Japanese, etc. and still selling strong after 25 years, this is the first and best loved book on yoga and conscious pregnancy, birth and beyond. The story is simple: an American yogini becomes pregnant and is informed that she must stop doing yoga now. Instead, she creates a yoga practice for mothers. From the author's experience in giving ecstatic birth and in sharing prenatal yoga with mothers around the world, this (wo)manual is created. All childbirth preparation is based on the principles of yoga breath control, relaxation/surrender, and a flexible strength to maintain focus. These are taught through yoga and when applied to the childbearing process, are the best news since psychedelics for the evolution of consciousness. Perhaps the most important contribution to healing the Earth by healing Birth, PRENATAL YOGA is a definitive textbook on "freebirth" how to honor the Holy Trinity of mother, baby AND father. Men will find the main thesis of PRENATAL YOGA to be an excellent map of consciousness for the journey home to their souls as fathers. The book has five of the author's personal birth stories including a breech baby, twins and two waterbirths at home plus an excellent introduction to the ecstatic possibilities of mothering as a spiritual process. However, the main text is devoted to simple instructions in how to do yoga when pregnant and prepare for a conscious birth and beyond.Postures, Breath Practices, and Meditations with many photos and drawings to accompany the clear text. The images of ecstatic birth, like a family album, serve as an inspiration for the possible family conscious co-creators out of love. The ideal baby shower or Blessing Way gift with durable smithsewn binding and designed to be handed down with the best baby clothes.

Primal Awareness
Donald Trent Jacobs
The remarkable story of one man's rediscovery of his primordial mandate and of the strange journey that took him there.
Explores the innate knowledge that exists within us all, a "primal awareness," that can help us to live in harmony with our world.  Shows how we can rediscover this unseeable realm.
In 1983, caught in a violent rainstorm while kayaking the Rio Urique in Mexico's Copper Canyon, Don Trent Jacobs was swept into an impassable catacomb of underwater tunnels toward what he believed was certain death. But instead of panic, Jacobs found himself filled with a strange consciousness that left him feeling at peace and invigorated with a confidence he had never before known. Moments later he was spit from the tunnel alive--not at the end of his journey, but only at its beginning.  Primal Awareness tells the story of Don Trent Jacobs's remarkable vision of the human mind and heart and the compelling spiritual quest that brought him to it. Through his experiences with the Raramuri people of Mexico and his research of other indigenous societies, Jacobs identifies what he calls our "primal awareness," an innate knowledge that exists within us all.  Jacobs shows how we can rediscover this primordial mandate that unites all things and that helps us to find our own inner strength an harmony.
Don Trent Jacobs earned a doctorate in health psychology while training wild horses, playing piano in nightclubs, and working as an EMT.   He holds a second doctorate in education renewal and is the Education Department Chair of the Oglala Lakota College on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.  He is the author of The Bum's Rush: The Selling of Environmental Backlash and seven other books.
"Primal Awareness is a great book.  Equal in effect to  Carlos Castaneda's writings, it challenges our thinking in a way that reveals the true magnificence of  human potential." Daniel Hays, coauthor of My Old Man and the Sea
"A philosophical quest for the lost ark, filled with adventure."  Sam Keen, author of Fire in the Belly
"Don Jacobs is a renaissance man who has written an adventure story that reflects his depth of experience as well as his heart.  Primal Awareness is compelling reading with a profound impact. Both suspense story and spiritual quest, it embraces realms of psychology, anthropology, and magic.  As I turned its pages, I was moved to laughter and tears.  I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the mysteries of the human mind and heart."  Dan Millman, author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior, and Everyday Enlightenment
"Don Jacobs has uncovered the roots of indigenous psychology that all people share and that, once found, can lead to harmonious living."Ed McGaa, Eagle Man, author of Mother Earth Spirituality

A reader: "If other books are dynamite, this is nuclear. It documents how the Mystai at Eleusis became Epoptes, a standard rite of passage for all the famous Greek minds we seek to understand. Full understanding is not possible without initiation such as is outlined in this volume. Eleusis is at the end of a line of mystical experience that goes back to 5000 BCE. Is is not so much that the Mystery of Eleusis is revealed, as that it points the sacred way to unravel the mystery of our own existence. The Greeks knew, and if you do as they did, you can too. Wasson tells us what the Greeks did." Tells it, that is, empirically, archaeo-logically.

The Sacred Heritage
The Influence of Shamanism on Analytical Psychology
Edited by Donald F. Sandner & Steven H. Wong
The essays in The Sacred Heritage describe the many facets shamanism and analytical psychology have in common; animal symbolism; recognition of the reality of the collective unconscious; and healing rituals that put reality of the therapist and patient in touch with transpersonal powers.
By introducing the core of shamanism in contemporary form, these essays shape a powerful means of healing that combines the direct contact with the inner psyche one finds in shamanism with the self-reflection and critical awareness of modern consciousness. Introduction: Analytical Psychology and Shamanism; "What Was All that Rustling in the Woods?": Quotes from C. G. Jung; Eliade, Jung, and Shamanism; C. G. Sacred Mask, Sacred Dance

Evan John Jones, Chas Clifton (Contributor)
Occult and Metaphysics Editor's Recommended Book
Most people think that masks are designed to conceal, but Sacred Mask Sacred Dance reveals how masks are a tool for transformation. Evan Jones and Chas Clifton have studied the use of masks and dance in ancient rituals, and incorporated masked dances into modern workings. Their approach to incorporated masked rites into a coven's rituals reflects a concern for maintaining the well being of the group while exploring the power of the masked dance to transcend the usual state of consciousness and "awaken dormant spiritual states." 224 pages, paper, 7x10", $19.95, Less 20%

The Sacred Mushroom Seeker
Tributes to R. Gordon Wasson
Thomas J. Riedlinger, editor, Terrence McKenna, Peter T. Furst, others
Wasson (1898-1986) was an amateur mycologist whose scholarly writings on hallucinogenic mushrooms pioneered the field of ethnomycology and sparked the psychedelic movement.
A legendary figure in the field of ethnobotany, R. Gordon Wasson's trail-blazing work on hallucinogenic mushrooms with the Mexican curandera Maria Sabina in the 1950s brought increased scholarly attention to the importance of psychoactive plants in the spiritual life of indigenous peoples, and had a profound influence well beyond the academic world. His accessible writings helped popularize these discoveries, forming the ground for the social revolution of the following decade. With the growing interest in the role of psychoactive plants in society today, the work of R. Gordon Wasson and the example set by the man himself, so well illustrated here, takes on increasing importance.
Edited by Thomas J. Riedlinger, who has written extensively on psychedelic plants and psychology, The Sacred Mushroom Seeker includes essays by the most distinguished names in the fields of ethnobotany, comparative religion, and anthropology.
"This work is a remarkable achievement. It successfully captures all aspects of a complex personality. Gordon Wasson was a wonderful mixture: part businessman, part adventurer, part scholar. He achieved more in each of these fields than most do in any one discipline. Sketching a life-size portrait of this intriguing man is no mean feat, but this work achieves that goal." Dr. Mark J. Plotkin, author of Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice

Shamanism
Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy
Mircea Eliade
Healer and psychopomp, the shaman is these because he commands the techniques of ecstasy--that is, because his soul can safely abandon his body and roam at vast distances, can penetrate the underworld and rise to the sky. Eliade's study of shamanism is one of his greatest and most influential works. He takes a global approach to the subject but focuses particularly on the traditions of North and Central Asia.
Born in Bucharest, educated in Calcutta, and a professor at the Sorbonne before settling at the University of Chicago, Eliade was considered the foremost authority on religion in the world. He was also an original writer of fiction and short stories, blending philosophy, mythology, fantasy, and personal narrative.
Through his own ecstatic experience, the shaman knows the roads of the extraterrestrial regions. He can go below and above because he has already been there. The danger of losing his way in these forbidden regions is still great; but sanctified by his initiation and furnished with his guardian spirits, the shaman is the only human being able to challenge the danger and venture into a mystical geography.
The great empirical overview by the seminal mythologist who defined "shamanism" for modern scholarship. Suffers, however, from Eliade's unempirical pharmacophobia. Nonetheless, an invaluable source.

Shamanism and the Drug Propaganda
Patriarchy and the Drug War
by Dan Russell
Discusses the archetypal aspects of the drug war - the evolutionary politics of the transition from tribal to industrial culture. It is true ancient history. The text is illuminated by 200 genuine pharmaco-shamanic images from the ancient world.
Herbal magic, real pharmaco-shamanism, is at the core of all matriarchal cultures. The Goddess does not separate from her herbal magic, from her invention of medicine. The central sacrament of all Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures known is an inebriative herb, a plant totem, which became metaphoric of the communal epiphany. These herbs, herbal concoctions and herbal metaphors are at the heart of all mythologies. They include such familiar images as the Burning Bush, the Tree of Life, the Cross, the Golden Bough, the Forbidden Fruit, the Blood of Christ, the Blood of Dionysos, the Holy Grail (or rather its contents), the Chalice (Kalyx:'flower cup'), the Golden Flower (Chrysanthemon), Ambrosia (Ambrotos:'immortal'), Nectar (Nektar:'overcomes death'), the Sacred Lotus, the Golden Apples, the Mystic Mandrake, the Mystic Rose, the Divine Mushroom (teonanacatl), the Divine Water Lily, Soma, Ayahuasca ('Vine of the Soul'), Kava, Iboga, Mama Coca and Peyote Woman. The transition from tribal to patriarchal culture - the invention of chattel slavery - changed the sanctioned interpretation of this imagery and criminalized the power-rites to which it referred.
"A magnificent production. I find it not only brilliant, but beautifully organized and, of course, something that needs to be. It is a tremendous work and, by nature, a tremendous volume." Professor Richard Evans Schultes, Director Emeritus, Botanical Museum of Harvard University
"I had to write in appreciation of the invaluable contribution you've made to realizing the possible human. Immediately, I was impressed with the multi-perspectives through which you see the classics. I find your book a major ally in delivering truth today." Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man
A Study in Terror and Healing
by Michael Taussig
A rare and stimulating combination of modern in-depth fieldwork experience and current ideas in literary criticism, performance theory, and self-reflexive anthropology - a subtle modern classic of anthropology, psychology and historiography.
From D.L. Browman - Choice:
"Taussig (University of Michigan) rejects what he terms the fetishism of scientific explanation and the tyranny of reification of concepts, arguing thatthe power of ideas and knowledge lies more in the realm of images than in concepts. . . .
Following this approach, his book is a series of dialectical images, and eschews an objective focus for disorderliness. The book is a further development of ideas initiated in his book The Devil and Commodity Fetishism in South America, and is influenced heavily by the papers of the Marxist philosopher Walter Benjamin.  Because of its powerful advocacy for an alternative exegesis of 'truth,' the work is recommended for philosophers, students of comparative literature and religion, theoretical social scientists, as well as for the evident Latin American constituency."
From Olivia Harris - New Statesman: "This is an enthralling and ambitious book. . . . It addresses colonialism. . . . It confronts the image of the primitive, . . .  the craft of shamanic healing. . . . While Taussig's subject is a reality similar to that of the great Latin American novelists, his book is written as documentary and so avoids the more overblown conceits of, for example, Garcia Marquez. . . . the colonised peripheries, . . . the dispossessed inhabit a bizarre and fragmented world . . . brilliantly evoked by Taussig. When he turns to theorising, however, the torrent of words sometimes loses direction. . . . In a sense he forestalls any attempt to measure the consistency of his thought-provoking, often entrancing writing, by arguing powerfully against academic conventions of order in favour of what he calls 'epistemic murk.'"
From Fernando Coronil - American Journal of Sociology: "This mind-opening book is a self-reflective exploration of colonialism and healing, a quest for new ways of seeing as much as for new insights into theworlds constructed by colonizers and colonized in the Americas. . . .  arguments unfold in a dazzling allegorical narrative whose very form challenges the sense of order that anthropological discourse constructs by objectifying and dissecting 'exotic' peoples. As in his earlier work, he turns to Colombians to illuminate and destabilize the 'First World' self. . . . Undoubtedly, this extraordinary book will advance the heated discussion within anthropology that Taussig's earlier work has justifiably engendered; in prefiguring the journey ahead, it will encourage ever more critical and creative explorations."

The Shaman's Doorway
Opening Imagination to Power and Myth
by Stephen Larsen, Joan Halifax
A renowned psychotherapist's and scholar's significant and inspiring work on the relation of shamanism to both the psyche and society.
Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., author of Personal Mythology and Broken Images, Broken Selves
"Shamanism represents a body of knowledge that is pertinent to the ailments of contemporary society. Dr. Larsen guides us through this legacy with skill and ease, teaching us how the shaman's visions can expand our own awareness."
Joseph Campbell
"An excellent analytical and harmonizing survey of this very complex field."
The Shaman's Doorway is one of the most significant and inspiring works on the relation of shamanism to both the psyche and society. Drawing on his own experience as a psychotherapist and his understanding of primordial shamanic traditions, Stephen Larsen shows the relevance of this path to the modern world and how it can lead to a creative and affirmative relationship with life. Defining the task of the shaman as one of bringing meaning and healing into life, and creating a sense of growing accord with the root of all being, Larsen clearly shows how the shaman, all too often perceived as belonging to the world's past, actually holds the key to our future.
Stephen Larsen is a practicing psychotherapist and director of the Stone Mountain Counseling Center. He is codirector of the Center for Symbolic Studies and is Professor Emeritus of SUNY. He is the author of The Mythic Imagination and coauthor of Fire in the Mind, the biography of his friend and mentor Joseph Campbell.

Shapeshifting
Shamanic Techniques for Global and Personal Transformation
by John Perkins
An exploration of the shamanic practice of shape shifting and the story of how learning these techniques helped the author transform from corporate executive to environmental activist. Many indigenous cultures have known the art of shapeshifting: the actual transformation of a human being into another living creature. Lakota Sioux warriors would shapeshift into buffalo to become better hunters and to honor the animal, and Andean shamans transform into plants from the jungle to learn healing power. In this book, author John Perkins examines these ancient shamanic practices and reveals the mental techniques that enable an individual to merge with another living creature. Shapeshifting is also the story of the author’s transformation from a corporate utility executive to an environmental activist. He examines the shamanic techniques of "becoming the other" from different cultures, and shows how it is within the capability of anyone to transform themselves on this deep level and achieve a true unity with all things.
John Perkins has traveled and worked with South American indigenous peoples since 1968. He currently arranges expeditions into the Amazon and has developed the POLE (Pollution Offset Lease on Earth) program with the Shuar and Achuar peoples as a means of preserving their culture against the onslaught of modern civilization. He is also the author of The Stress-Free Habit, Psychonavigation, Dream Change Audio, and The World Is As You Dream It.

Slavic Sorcery
Shamanic Journey of Initiation
Kenneth Johnson

Kenneth Johnson's nearly seamless integration of history with story, and his ability to shift effortlessly from concise factual contemporary reporting to Byzantine descriptions of his adventures in and around Saint Petersburg make Slavic Sorcery read like a novel. Occult and Metaphysics Editor's Recommended Book.
Explore the history and folklore of Eastern Europe and European Russia as Johnson delves into the superstitions and wives' tales that helped earth-magic beliefs, such as dowsing, survive the religious and political turmoil of the region. At the same time, add secrets of the Slavic magical tradition to your own repertoire through Johnson's experiences with Slavic spells, sacred places of power, tree magic, and spirits of the otherworld. You'll also find a delightful recounting of Johnson's learning experiences under the tutelage of Vladimir Antonov, a colorful and well-known practitioner of this ancient earth magic.
Booklist: "But Johnson does not merely share a travelogue of his adventures in shamanic Russia, though that would have been enough to make a fascinating book. He also provides an extraordinarily good review of the literature in English on Slavic religion. Moreover, he describes deities, old calendar beliefs, and ancient rituals in a lucid and appealing way. An excellent treatment of an unusual subject." 224 pages, paper, 6x9", $12.95, Less 20%

Soma
The Divine Hallucinogen
by David Spess
forward by Ram Dass
The definitive work on the ancient Hindu soma rituals mentioned in the Vedas and debated by scholars for decades. Soma has been shrouded in mystery for centuries.
It is simultaneously a sacred hallucinogenic plant used in secret rituals, a personified God, and an important cosmological principle. Summarizing all previous research on the subject, David Spess goes far beyond his predecessors and shows that soma provides an important key to the understanding of the earliest systemized methods of medicine, psychology, magic, rejuvenation, longevity, and alchemy.  Most significant is that his intensive research provides the most compelling case yet for actual identification of the plants that served as the basis for the divine hallucinogen Nelumbo nucifera, the sacred lotus of India, as well as some members of the Nymphaea genus.
Soma provides a much needed bridge between Eastern and Western esoteric traditions. Contained within the enigmatic verses about soma in the Rig Veda is a secret about ourselves and the nature of our relationship to the world and cosmos. Soma makes this knowledge available to us once again.
David Spess has a master's degree in microbiology/mycology and studied Sanskrit at the Naropa Institute. He was formerly a research mycologist for the FDA and has taught at the University of Colorado. He lives in New Mexico.
"Soma brilliantly completes the enquiry on the scientific and botanical aspects, as well as the anthropological and cultural development, of this very important subject. A magnificent book destined to become a classic."
Oscar Ichazo, author of Psychocalisthenics and Between Metaphysics and Protoanalysis
"By far the most thorough survey of both the botanical and the psycho-spiritual aspects of the soma plant that I've ever seen. All I can do is congratulate the author."

Spiritwalker
Messages from the Future
Henry Barnard Wesselman
"I am about to tell you a most unusual story, a chronicle of something that happened to me while I was living on the flank of an active volcano on the island of Hawai'i. I'm a scientist. I mention this because I do not feel that I was in any way predisposed for what was about to occur. In fact, my scientific training would seem to have preprogrammed me against such an experience." -- From Spiritwalker The astonishing true story of an anthropologist's quest into a spiritual world of magic, mysticism, and meaning.
Hank Wesselman's incredible story of a series of encounters that would forever change his life began with what he at first tried to explain away as particularly vivid dreams, but which grew increasingly intense and insistent, ultimately propelling him on twelve fantastic journeys across time and space. Over the next three years, his journeys proved to be far more important than mere reason could explain. Eventually, Dr. Wesselman became convinced that he'd been granted a visionary encounter with what tribal people from millennia past have called the "spirit world." During his epic travels, Dr. Wesselman met shape-shifting entities, spirit helpers, and guardians, and found himself traversing a mental, physical, and
spiritual landscape on a path intersecting that of a fellow traveler, a Hawai'ian kahuna mystic named Nainoa. Five thousand years into the future, Nainoa had been sent by his Chief on a journey into what used to be America, a once-powerful land of machines and magic, from which no previous voyagers had ever returned. What did Nainoa seek from Dr. Wesselman? What did the anthropologist have to learn about his own world from this exotic traveler from another time and place? Together, scientist and mystic are initiated into knowledge of non-ordinary levels of reality and given foreshadowings of imminent environmental, political, and spiritual challenges to their civilization. Without abandoning his scientific objectivity, Dr. Wesselman abandoned himself to the mystical, sometimes frightening, yet always luminous experiences that brought him beyond the boundaries of ordinary consciousness. The result is a fascinating and suspenseful adventure, an exciting and important archeological discovery, and the story of how a hard-headed scientific-realist stumbled on an important piece of the puzzle of human evolution. Socially urgent and disturbingly prophetic, Spiritwalker has a universal mythic resonance and an undeniable relevance for today as it challenges our
perceptions of our world, our reality, and our future.
Combining the prophetic elements of Ishmael and The Celestine Prophecy with the visionary dimension of The Art of Dreaming, Spiritwalker is the extraordinary true story of an anthropologist and skeptic who is initiated into an alternate reality and given dramatic insights into the future of our world.

Star Medicine
Native American Path to Emotional Healing
Wolf Moondance, Jim Sharpe (Illustrator), Sky Starhawk (Illustrator)
Occult and Metaphysics Editor's Recommended Book
To successfully travel the shamanic path, one must develop an understanding of the four elements that compose human beings: spirit, emotion, body, and mind. Wolf Moondance uses her rainbow medicine wheel to build a new interpretation of the vision quest based on the traditional foundations of Native American shamanic traditions. Star Medicine, the third book in her Rainbow Medicine series, focuses on the southern portion of the rainbow wheel, the domain of emotions. In this book, Moondance teaches ceremonies and dances of the South that can be performed by anyone with the desire and dedication. These dances are the way to spiritual visions, where lessons that show the magic of emotion are learned. Moondance delves into the spirit world alongside readers as she lights the path to discovery and connects visions with poetic accounts of her personal experiences on the rainbow wheel.
A Native American shaman draws on both her Osage and Cherokee heritages and on her training in modern psychology to present a totally new approach to emotional healing. Each chapter features a shamanic story, a ceremony, and a vision to help readers become more deeply in touch with the "dance of life." 44 illustrations.

Starwalking
Shamanic Practices for Traveling into the Night Sky
Page Bryant
Interweaving detailed star maps with descriptions of ceremonies and ceremonial objects used by the ancient Egyptians, Native Americans, Britons, Maya, Aztecs, and Dogons, this book creatively bridges astronomy and shamanism. It provides a useful and practical guide for understanding and reclaiming our spiritual connection to the stars.
From Independent Publisher:
"Page Bryant has written an interesting book that relates both ancient and current legends and practices for starwalking, or connecting to the spiritual world of celestial bodies. Her book combines information from her studies of astronomy and ancient ceremonial sites with extensive knowledge of both Native American and New Age spiritual practices. The impressionistic, anecdotal style that makes this book quite readable is also, however, sometimes its weakness.... Bryant also includes passages from her spirit guide, Albion and a belief in channelling is required to take those passages as seriously as other parts of the book. If you are very open to New Age practices, intrigued by the spiritual significance of the stars and planets, or interested in Native American spiritual practices, Starwalking will provide you with a plethora of ideas and significant history."

The Strong Eye of Shamanism
A Journey into the Caves of Consciousness
Robert E. Ryan
The author:
"Shamanism is eternal mind.
Through understanding the shaman's powerful symbols and techniques and the creative powers natural to our deep psyche we can help fight the dissociation which currently splinters the modern psyche. The psyche contains archetypal patterns of transformation with which contemporary man has lost touch but which shamans have employed over what appears to be an incredibly long period of time to gain access to a world of power, essence and meaning.
The shaman's symbols both give effective force to and bring to our conscious attention these enduring patterns of transformation. Such patterns exist with an uncanny similarity in both structure and function throughout the world in various shamanic traditions even though they belong to cultures so widely separated by time and distance that cultural exchange appears to be either extremely unlikely or extraordinarily remote in time.  Yet, as this book attempts to illustrate, in each tradition a visionary world, a pattern of inner experience, emerges which employs a shared grammar of symbols to both effect and reflect the experience, in Mircea Eliade's terms, "of deeply meaningful altered states of consciousness." The extraordinary durative power and universality of these symbols suggest that they encode formal properties deep within that portion of the mind which Jung referred to as the transpersonal or collective psyche manifesting themselves in patterns with a form and purpose which seem to extend from the Upper Paleolithic era into contemporary times. These patterns are related to and enlist natural properties revitalizing mind and body which are both illuminative and therapeutic, and reawaken the plastic or mythopoeic powers of the human mind explaining why shamans have been recognized as the world's first true artists."
Not just an academic work. Helps the reader experience the actual mindset of the shaman.  Presents a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie all religion. The Strong Eye of Shamanism draws together the many facets of the art of shamanism, presenting a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie its practice. The strong eye of the title refers to the archetypal symbolism that sits at the foundation of all human life--whether in Paleolithic caves or today's temples. The author asserts that society has become separated from the power of those symbols that lead us into deeper understanding of our spirituality. In today's world of splintered psyches, a world in which people are in search of their souls, shamanism survives as an age-old technology of soul recovery, a living Rosetta stone that reminds us of the shared foundation that exists beneath even the most radically different perspectives. Through its study of shamanism, archetypal psychology, and symbolism, The Strong Eye of Shamanism encourages individuals--and society--to look inward and remember that the deepest forms of awareness begin with the knowledge that the answers reside within us.

Tangible Visions
Northwest Coast Indian Shamanism and Its Art
Allen Wardwell
Fifteen years in the making, Tangible Visions is a comprehensive study of the spectacular ritual objects created by Northwest Coast shamans, including the masks, rattles, costumes, amulets and other paraphernalia of shaman rituals, dating from as recently as the turn of the century. 600 illustrations, 325 in color
The Atlantic Monthly, Phoebe-Lou Adams
"Lavish and beautiful . . . a wonderful view of shamanistic equipment."
Northwest Coast Indian Art is famous for its spectacular totem poles, house posts, feast dishes, boxes, and painted house fronts. Less well known but equally important is the art made for use by shamans, particularly those of the Tlingit, Tsimshian, and Haida tribes. This volume presents the first comprehensive illustrated study of the various kinds of painted and carved objects that were carried and worn by shamans as they went about their duties.
In order to form alliances with animal spirits, Northwest Coast shamans deprived themselves of food, water, and sleep during long vigils in the wilderness. The spirits that came to them in dreams and visions at such times could then be summoned to assist in healing and divinatory seances. Much of the ceremonial paraphernalia represents the helping spirits in the shaman's service.  Certain examples which show complex juxtapositions of many animals and human figures depict the dreams or trance experiences of the shaman at the time he was forming his alliances. This study places Northwest Coast shamanism in a world-wide context and demonstrates the ways its practices and beliefs are similar to those found elsewhere. Throughout the book are archival photographs - portraits of shamans and their decaying grave houses - as well as descriptions of their lives, exploits, and performances. A discussion of the characteristics of shamanic art includes the meaning of the complex iconography, which includes such creatures as land otters, devilfish, oystercatchers, mountain goats, and drowning men. The heart of the book is a catalogue of the objects - masks, amulets, storage boxes, drinking cups, clothing, drums, rattles, figure sculptures, soul catchers, staffs, crowns, and combs - employed by shamans. More than five hundred photographs, a large number published here for the first time, show the finest examples of Northwest Coast shamanistic art in museums and private collections throughout the world.
 From Library Journal:
"This book is the product of extensive scholarly investigation into the material culture of shamanism as practiced by various Northwest Pacific Coast tribes. Wardwell (Island Ancestors, Washington/Detroit Inst. of the Arts, 1994), who had access to the premier ethnographic collections of the United States, Canada, and Europe, focuses specifically on shamanic objects, including masks, drums, clothing, and other ceremonial paraphernalia. Many of the objects depicted have never been photographed or discussed in earlier publications. The richness of religious practice is captured in almost exclusive detail, illuminating the beliefs of the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian peoples, among others. While the 500 beautifully photographed illustrations are the core of this work, the author's catalog entries provide invaluable information. Wardwell ties his research firmly to the history of shamanic ritual, making this essential for academic and specialized libraries." Paula A. Baxter, NYPL
This lavishly illustrated record of the accoutrements of shamanism among Northwest coastal Indians is the product of 15 years of research by Allen Wardwell, former curator of primitive art at the Art Institute of Chicago. The items shown include amulets and robes, each a tangible echo of shamanistic power.

From Carlos Castaneda's first book, The Teachings of Don Juan, to The Power of Silence, millions of readers have enjoyed the fantastic teachings of Don Juan Matus, the Yaqui shaman from northern Mexico. Author Victor Sanchez offers practical techniques based on Castaneda's writings that can be applied to everyday life--the body as a field of energy, the not-doings of the personal self, stopping the eternal dialogue, the magic of attention, setting up dreaming, the warrior's greatest love and much more.
Midwest Book Review:
"Familiarize yourself with the spiritual transformative teachings of Don Carlos of the Castaneda shaman fame; then use this to provide practical applications of his philosophy to everyday life. Chapters present segments of his ideas and blend in exercises and applications to everyday life."

Technicians of Ecstasy
Shamanism and the Modern Artist
Mark Levy
Mark Levy's meaty scholarship and lucid interpretations demonstrate the power and the centrality of the shamanic mindset in modern and contemporarty art. He argues convincingly for the continuing importance of the artist-as-shaman in these supposedly rational times. As Levy insists, art heals and reveals that which science cannot. Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Karen Finley are just a few of the well-known artists who have used shamanistic techniques to access visions.  Levy explores the use of seeing dreaming and ritual by these and other artists seeking the kind of visionary experience that has long been the wellspring of creativity. Since humankind first learned to use imagination and dreaming there have been seers and sages eager to press beyond the known and verifiable to see what they can see. This is their story.

Toltecs of the New Millennium
Victor Sanchez, Robert Nelson (Translator)
Sanchez describes the Toltec tradition living on in the practice of contemporary indigenous people of Mexico, and explains how this wisdom is available to sincere readers. According to the author, his work is "witness and participant in one of the most profound and powerful spiritual traditions of the mesoamerican indigenous world. . . ."
Philosophy and Religion Editor's Recommended Book
Having lived among Mesoamerican Indians for 15 years, the anthropologist Victor Sanchez informs his readers that Toltecs do not believe in their gods but perceive them directly. Sanchez identifies these natives as living descendants of the famous Toltec sages of Pre-Columbian times and, noting that their "separate reality" cannot be understood unless directly experienced, he takes us into their world, introducing their rituals and beliefs, which, incredibly, seem to substantiate much of Carlos Castaneda's depiction of Indian spirituality. In their profound communion with nature, the living Toltecs have much to teach the urban spiritual warrior.
Midwest Book Review
"The toltec tradition is not only accessible through stories and legends, but as a living tradition with living practitioners among the indigenous peoples of Mexico. Victor Sanchez takes the reader directly into the power and majesty of the Toltec world, offering a rare glimpse into the life and practice of these spiritual warriors who trace their lineage to a time before the Aztecs. The Toltec heritage includes profound communion with their land, an intimate relationship with nature, unusual possibilities of perception, and belief that the Earth is a living being. In spite of the pressures of modern society, the Toltecs have managed to carefully protect their way of knowledge. Their amazing survival at the dawn of the new millennium points to the importance of a renewed commitment to a better way of life, congruent with spirit and nature. Toltecs of the New Millennium is a fascinating and revealing book!"

Walking in the Sacred Manner
Healers, Dreamers, and Pipe Carriers-Medicine Women of the Plains Indians
by Mark St. Pierre, Tilda Long Soldier
A portrait of the role of women in the spiritual and religious life of the Plains Indians community emerges from interviews with holy women and their families, showing the special status of female healers and destroying Native American stereotypes. Walking in the Sacred Manner is an exploration of the myths and culture of the Plains Indians, for whom the everyday and the spiritual are intertwined and women play a strong and important role in the spiritual and religious life of the community.
Based on extensive first-person interviews by an established expert on Plains Indian women, Walking in the Sacred Manner is a singular and authentic record of the participation of women in the sacred traditions of Northern Plains tribes, including Lakota, Cheyenne, Crow, and Assiniboine.
Through interviews with holy women and the families of women healers, Mark St. Pierre and Tilda Long Soldier paint a rich and varied portrait of a society and its traditions. Stereotypical images of the Native American drop away as the voices, dreams, and experiences of these women (both healers and healed) present insight into a culture about which little is known. It is a journey into the past, an exploration of the present, and a view full of hope for the future.
In this brilliantly illuminating book, the authors explore how women are called to be shamans, the special status of female healers within the community, and the traditional rituals and healing methods they practice.

The Wheel of Time
The Shamans of Ancient Mexico, Their Thoughts About Life, Death and the Universe
Carlos Castaneda
Dr. Carlos Castaneda is an anthropologist, and he was an apprentice of don Juan Matus, a Mexican Indian shaman.
Carlos Castaneda's new book, The Wheel of Time, is a collection of quotes, drawn from eight of the books that he wrote about the classical training of a shaman initiate. Don Juan Matus, who trained Castaneda for thirteen years,  endeavored to usher Carlos Castaneda into the world of the shamans of ancient Mexico - the founders of his lineage of shamans. His claim was that his shamanistic world was ruled by another system of cognition, different than the cognition that rules our daily world. According to what Carlos Castaneda found out in the course of his apprenticeship, the world of the shamans of ancient Mexico was indeed ruled by a system of cognition vastly different than our own.
Upon examining the quotations of The Wheel of Time, Carlos Castaneda realized that there was nothing extemporaneous about the way don Juan Matus had guided him, although at the time, his instruction seemed to have been carried out on the spur of the moment. Rather, his training was carried out following a covert impulse determined by a tradition that was set in motion by the shamans who lived in Mexico thousands of years ago.

Where the Spirits Ride the Wind
Trance Journeys and Other Ecstatic Experiences
Felicitas D. Goodman, Gerhard Binder (Illustrator)
Anthropologist Goodman (Speaking in Tongues) documents the effects of body posture on trance experience. Intrigued by the physical changes that take place during trance states, she began to record the observations of students who entered a trance-like condition while concentrating on the sound of Goodman's rattle for 15 minutes. Whenever she led a workshop in trance journeys--whether in Berlin, Vienna, New Mexico or Ohio--her subjects' journeys always lasted for 15 minutes, but where they went and what they saw, heard and learned, maintains Goodman, depended on the particular body posture they had assumed. One position conjured up sensations of flying; others took subjects into an underground realm; in some the journeyer was transformed into an animal. From the "Tennessee diviner'' to the "healing Bear,'' the postures are derived, according to Goodman, from ancient, even prehistoric traditions, known to us through cave drawings, anthropological description and other sources. "I found this book to be one of the most helpful works to the study of shamanic realizations. Ms. Goodman has opened up our minds to astounding possibilities."

The White Goddess
A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth
by Robert Graves
The earliest European deity was the White Goddess of Birth, Love and Death, visibily appearing as the New, Full, and Old Moon, and worshipped under countless titles.
In this work, Graves shows that the theme of "true poetry" or "pure poetry" is inseparably connected with the ancient, inherently pharmaco-shamanic, cult-ritual of the White Goddess and her Son. Graves created a great and true book of real history by analyzing The Battle of the Trees, an ancient Welsh shaman song preserved in the twelfth century by an interested monk. The Battle of the Trees enabled Graves to analyze history as an ancient Welsh shaman would have, in practical pharmaco-mythological terms.  A seminal classic, and an incredible time trip - but a challenging read - not for the lazy.
Poetry Editor's Recommended Book:
"Robert Graves, the late British poet and novelist, was also known for his studies of the mythological and psychological sources of poetry. With The White Goddess: A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth, Graves was able to combine many of his passions into one work. While the book is so poetically written that many of the passages amount to prose poems, it is also frequently plot driven enough to feel like a novel, and it is rich with scholarly insight into the deep wells of poetry. Especially fascinating is the chapter in which Graves explores the ancient and ongoing practice of poets' invoking the muse. Graves details the practice in both the Eastern and Western literary traditions, and shows specific similarities and differences among Greek, British, and Irish tales and myths about the muse. Graves has much to offer students of history and myth, but poetry lovers will also be fascinated with The White Goddess."

Witchcraft and the Shamanic Journey
Pagan Folkways from the Burning Times
Kenneth Johnson
Learn why Shamanism has survived through the centuries.  This book reveals the spiritual roots of Western culture.
An in-depth study of witchcraft trial records and the testimony of the witches themselves prove that European peasants accused of witchcraft died, in fact, for the sake of the world's oldest spiritual path. The 20th century has seen an astounding revival of European pagan beliefs such as witchcraft, but could these pre-Christian traditions have roots in an even older heritage, one common to people in lands as far apart as Iceland and South America?   Kenneth Johnson believes so, and as he sifts through the records left from the witch trials of the 15th and 16th centuries, he uncovers bits of evidence that point to an ancient shamanic lore that survives in Slavic, Icelandic, and even North American cultural beliefs. According to Johnson, such a far-reaching lore would necessarily have its origins with the very beginnings of humankind before we migrated across the continents. Johnson's colorful prose transports the reader to diverse eras, from colonial Greenland to 19th-century United States. He blends this prose with historical research and practical spiritual exercises, exploring the origins of an ancient pathway while reestablishing our connection to it.

The Witch's Dream
A Healer's Way of Knowledge
by Florinda Donner-Grau, Carlos Castaneda
A renowned student of don Juan Matus, Florinda Donner-Grau entered the world of spiritual healing as an anthropologist. But her involvement soon deepened into something far more personal when she bacame an apprentice to doña Mercedes, and aged healer in a remote Venezuelean town known for its population of spiritualists, sorcerers, and mediums. This book presents a fascinating report on what she has encountered.
"Each chapter of this book takes you to one of the "lessons" Florinda was exposed to under the witch's tutelage. It's amazing that some of those lessons were just stories, not actual experiences lived by Florinda but by somebody else who tells her the story. In that sense, just reading it is like having the same input she had, taking the same lesson up to some extent, and that reading put me into deep philosophical and meditational mood. Really interesting and really deep for me."

The World Is As You Dream It
Shamanic Teachings From The Amazon And Andes
by John Perkins
In his third book on native spirituality and ecology, John Perkins takes fellow travelers deep into the jungles of Ecuador, to the home of the Shuar and their healing shamans, or curanderos.

Hoping to help the Shuar, who face Western encroachment and the destruction of native forests, Perkins comes to realize that it is the mind and soul of the Western, "developed" cultures that are most in need of help and healing. Our distorted vision of the human being at the top of nature's pyramid contrasts vividly with the native dream of an intricate, intimate relationship among all participants in the web of life. Through their music, myth, herbal medicine, and the sacred ceremony of the hallucinogenic plant ayahuasca, the Shuar invite us into a dream that they have made reality-one that is nourishing and life-sustaining and in which the great privilege of being human is in embracing our role as caretakers of Mother Earth.
Nationally acclaimed environmentalist, teacher, and activist, John Perkins has traveled widely in pursuit of native wisdom, writing and lecturing on the importance of indigenous cultures to the survival of the planet. He is a founding member of the Dreamchange Coalition of Shamans and Environmentalists, a non-profit organization devoted to protecting rain forests worldwide and to preserving indigenous cultures. John Perkins is also the author of Shapeshifting, The Stress-Free Habit and Psychonavigation as well as the audiocassette Dream Change.
