Publishes Updated Report on Salvia Divinorum
Recent scientific findings concerning the
Mazatec plant Salvia
divinorum, including its unique site of action within the brain,
suggest
that further research may lead to the development of safe and
novel
medical treatments for people suffering from depression. Yet,
just as
researchers are beginning to better understand the plant, a federal
bill
(HR 5607) threatens to call such promising research to a halt
by placing the plant and its active principle, salvinorin A, into
Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.
In an effort to provide public policy guidance
on this issue, the
nonprofit Center for Cognitive Liberty & Ethics (CCLE) has
released an
updated version of its "Report on Salvia divinorum and its
Active
Principle." This report examines recent scientific findings,
public
health statistics, and statutory criteria for placing a drug into
Schedule I, and concludes that neither Salvia divinorum nor salvinorin
A meet the criteria for inclusion in Schedule I, and that placement
in
Schedule I will all but preclude further scientific studies of
the
plant.
The updated CCLE report on Salvia divinorum
is available in PDF format
via the CCLE's web site, and was made possible by tax-deductible
donations to the Salvia Divinorum Defense Fund. A hardcopy of
the report is mailed free to all persons donating $20.00 or more
to the Fund.
