Write a Letter for Ed Rosenthal

posted at DrugWar.com Jan. 19, 2003

Hey Everyone,

Please take the time to write a letter to the editor about Ed Rosenthal
and/or Ed Beirling. Below are some bullet points to help shape your letters
and a list of where to send your letters to the editor.

Please note: Most newspapers require that letters be signed and that an
address and daytime phone number be included for verification. If you are
sending your letter via email or fax, type "Letter to the Editor" in the
subject heading. Most newspapers retain the right to edit your letter before
publishing it; in order to ensure as little editing as possible, try to keep
your letter to about 250 words. For general letter writing tips, read this
San Francisco Chronicle column

Dear Editor:

§ Ed Rosenthal is recognized worldwide as an authority on marijuana. In his
thirty-plus years as a cannabis expert, he has written or edited more than a
dozen books about marijuana cultivation and social policy, that cumulatively
have sold over one million copies. Rosenthal is a member of the
International Cannabinoid Research Society and the Garden Writers
Association of America, and has served as an expert witness on marijuana
cultivation in federal and state trials. Since the passage of California's
pioneering Prop 215 in 1996, which authorizes medicinal use of marijuana, he
has worked with the state's growers, dispensaries, and local governments to
standardize and implement the delivery of pharmaceutical grade cannabis to
patients.

§ On February 12, 2002, Ed was arrested by federal agents for applying his
knowledge and helping patients to use medical marijuana. He has been charged
on three counts of cultivation and conspiracy, and if convicted faces a
minimum of 10 years in prison.

§ I do not understand why the Federal Government is prosecuting people
involved with Medical Marijuana.  In a report commissioned by the Federal
Government, The Institute of Medicine conducted a comprehensive study in
1999 to assess the potential health benefits of marijuana and its
constituent cannabinoids. The study concluded that "Nausea, appetite loss,
pain and anxiety . . . all can be mitigated by marijuana."  In addition, the
study concluded that there are some conditions for which marijuana is the
most effective treatment the Institute of Medicine concluded that "there are
some limited circumstances in which we recommend smoking marijuana for
medical purposes."

§ On November 5, 1996 the voters of California passed Proposition 215, also
known as the Compassionate Use Act of 1996. This proposition exempts
patients and defined caregivers from criminal prosecution or sanction who
possess, cultivate and use marijuana for medical treatment recommended by a
physician. It also encouraged the federal and state governments to implement
a plan to provide for the safe and affordable distribution of marijuana to
all patients in medical need of marijuana.

§ As a patient suffering from ___________________, I have used marijuana and
have found its' relief much more effective than other pharmaceutical
medications prescribed for my symptoms. Opponents have claimed that other
medications are better treatments for conditions such as AIDS wasting and
complications with chemotherapy that are commonly treated with medical
marijuana.  However, these are the very examples of where the government's
own research indicates that marijuana is the most effective treatment.
According to the Institute of Medicine report, "[T]here will likely always
be a subpopulation of patients who do not respond well to other medications.
The combination of cannabinoid drug effects (anxiety reduction, appetite
stimulation, nausea reduction, and pain relief) suggests that cannabinoids
would be moderately well suited for certain conditions, such as
chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and AIDS wasting."

§ It seems like a double standard is being applied here. On the one hand,
the government's own agency of science is saying one thing regarding the
usefulness of medical marijuana, while the Department of Justice is putting
people like Ed Rosenthal in jail for 20 years.

§ So why isn't the Attorney General Bill Lockyer defending our state laws
and protecting our citizens? Why is Ed Rosenthal now being prosecuted for
something the voters of California agreed should protect these individuals
who provide aid to those in need?
