Debate Over Drug Laws Hits Waterbury Area

A panel of six people, including a recovering
crack addict, a police officer, and a states attorney will
debate decriminalizing, legalizing and medicalizing street drugs
on Saturday, June 8th from 1:00 to
4:00 p.m. at the Wolcutt Town Hall at 10 Kenea Avenue. The public
forum, called Street Drugs and Public Safety: Reconsidering
the Current Model brings a hot national issue to the Waterbury
area.
Speaking for a change in the drug laws will
be Mary Barr, a drug treatment therapist and recovering crack
cocaine addict, Attorney Michael Cutler of the Committee of Lawyers
of Massachusetts, and Cliff Thornton of the Hartford-based drug
policy reform organization Efficacy.
Speaking for the status quo will be Waterbury
States Attorney John Connelly, Wolcott Police Officer and
DARE representative Brian Thies, and Paul Sequeira, Assistant
Superintendent of Education in Waterbury.
The program will be directed by Michael
Bruce of Wolcutt and hosted by Tom Brophy, former talk show host
at WATR radio.
