TO: Jackson Sun about Sun Sentinel Article
and Visa Versa
"Those Dirty Dogs"
I received the below included article from
the Drug Policy
Foundation of Texas.
Their website is http://www.dpft.org/
Don't you, Jackson Sun, have a poll on your
site right now
asking, "Do you support the widespread use of drug testing
for
all students?" http://www.jacksonsun.com/
And aren't the poll results currently 63.5%
against the concept?
Using dogs to search students is exactly
the same thing, and
goes directly against what the public obviously wants!
Has everyone lost their minds? Education
works, incarceration
does not. Yet Florida spends $22,000 a year to house each of its
100,000-or-so state and local prisoners and only about $4000 to
educate each child! And I'll bet most if not all states are
pretty much the same.
Perhaps if we spent the money the other way
around, we wouldn't
need so many prisons.
But... (sigh) ...I guess that issue pales
in comparison to the
money being made by the industries and organizations involved
in
keeping us on the wrong track...
It's time to quit targeting students, or
anyone else for that
matter, and figure out what's wrong with using policies that
haven't ever, in all of history, shown a victory.
If we had any sense, we'd call for an end
to this drug war now
and save our children from the very real peril of bad policies.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel
In Florida, Drug-sniffing dogs could be combing Broward County
school corridors as soon as next month. The prospect has civil
liberty organizations up in arms -- and warning that the move
creates a police-state atmosphere. (03/27/02)
