ORLANDO - Hiring retirees as drug smugglers
worked until a Mexican marijuana ring lost 828 pounds of pot this
week on its arrival to Florida.
Arrests beginning Tuesday rounded up the
accused grower, a rancher with 5,000 acres in Sonora, Mexico;
the smugglers; the driver; and a pot-smoking Florida teenager
who served as interpreter, according to testimony Thursday in
federal court in Orlando.
Robert Dean Stephenson, a 60-year-old veteran
living on a military pension, unknowingly allowed the federal
Drug Enforcement Administration to tail his aging motor home on
a weeklong round trip from De Land, Fla., to pick up the dope
in Arizona, an agent testified.
