Monday afternoon, people gathered to hear
how to legalize marijuana in Utah.
The "father of medicinal marijuana," Dennis Peron, came
to speak to Weber State University as part of a Utah tour. The
main reason for the tour was Peron's recent arrest in Cedar City,
Utah, on drug-related charges and his pending trial, which has
forced him to prolong his stay in the state.
Marijuana is one of the three major wars
Peron said he has fought within his life. All of them have provided
a reason for his fight to legalize marijuana. One of the first
"wars" was the Vietnam War.
At 18 he joined the Air Force trying to avoid
being shipped to Vietnam, where he was sent one year later. During
the war he was responsible for putting bodies from "as far
as the eye could see" from stretchers into body bags. Marijuana
provided one way to self-medicate during such a stressful time.
"I'm a guy that's been created by war,"
Peron said.
