Corruption
claims stop drug case
June 27, 2002
A HEARING of charges against an alleged Melbourne
drug king-pin has been adjourned while investigations are conducted
into corruption claims against Victorian drug squad detectives.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Bill Morgan-Payler,
QC, today applied to adjourn the committal hearing involving millionaire
businessman Antonious Mokbel, who is accused of heading a $2 billion
drug syndicate.
Earlier this week Mr Morgan-Payler told the Melbourne Magistrates
Court that other police investigations were under way that might
affect the Mokbel case.
One serving and one former drug squad detective
who worked on the Mokbel case were arrested last year over separate
drug trafficking allegations and are now awaiting county court
trials.
