Can inmate smoke pot in jail for medical reasons?

Saint John, N.B.- Public safety minister Margaret Anne Blaney says having an inmate with the right to smoke marijuana is a first for the province. She says the province doesn't have a policy for this situation but will have to come up with one before July 18.

That's when Greg Boyle is to appear for sentencing. Boyle was convicted of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. But because of chronic back pain, Boyle has the legal right to possess and grow marijuana for medical proposes.

Boyle may take that legal right behind bars. He says the benefits he gets from marijuana far outweigh the side effects of narcotic painkillers.
