McKinney Draws Fire With Call for Probe
By Salim Muwakkil
April 22, 2002
Rep. Cynthia McKinney's call for an investigation
into whether the Bush administration had advance notice of the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and failed to act because of economic
interests has triggered a national avalanche of scorn.
Pundits and politicians alike lit into the
Georgia Democrat with invective so vituperative, one might have
thought she was nabbed in a cave consorting with Osama bin Laden.
McKinney's initial statements were made in
March during an interview on a radio station in Berkeley, Calif.,
and her remarks later were published in an April 12 Washington
Post account of that interview.
"We know there were numerous warnings
of the events to come on Sept. 11," she was quoted as saying.
"What did this administration know and when did it know it,
about the events of Sept. 11?" She also said "people
close to this administration are poised to make huge profits off
America's new war."
