WASHINGTON- Former Washington Mayor
Marion Barry said on Monday he was rethinking plans to revive
his political career because of negative publicity stemming from
reports that police had found traces of drugs in his car.
"This incident won't go away. It's distracting
me from my issues that I want to talk about," Barry said
in a local television interview. "The image of the city is
connected to my image and that's not good."
Barry said he was giving "great thought"
to not running for an at-large seat on the capital's city council
this year and would soon decide whether to abandon his plans for
a political comeback.
Barry, 66, announced his intention to seek
the city council seat on March 6. On March 21, U.S. Park Police
reported that they found traces of cocaine and marijuana in Barry's
car when they confronted him in a deserted area of southwest Washington.
