Eddie Smith, Cancer Patient and Medical
Marijuana User, in Hospital
from Kay Lee - Making the Walls Transparent
Sigh... I know... It's one thing after another....
Many of you signed a card at the recent NORML
conference meant for our friend Eddie Smith. Eddie, who has AIDS/Cancer,
was a fellow traveler on the Journey For Justice Florida and Texas.
Since smoking his first joint in Al Gore's
office in Texas (to
rebut Gore's fib about no medical evidence for the use of
marijuana), Eddie has cris-crossed the country, making
demonstration a way of life.
He's been in and out of the hospital too
often lately and this
time it is really scary: He has tumors over one side of his body
and the other side is where all the pain is.
I talked to him tonight and sick as he is,
what I've always said about my friend remains true: "Eddie-Eddie"
still laughs easy.
He's holding on to the courage that got him
out of Gore's office safely that time, but he's depressed, scared,
you know, human? He's handling it well, but needs to know he is
not forgotten.
If you could just pick up a phone and give
him a call, your voice could be the one he needs most to hear.
If anyone gets a physical address before I do tomorrow, lets just
cover his room in cards. It will lift his spirits just like it
did Joe Hart's when you did it for him.
Oh, and if any of you do interviews, you
might want to ask Eddie about the fact that he is being allowed
space to use his cannabis... That's much more than Joe Hart got
from the
VA....They gave him all the morphine he wanted, but wouldn't let
him use pot so he could lift his head out of the urinal long enough
to die with a shred of dignity!
Thank you for sharing your compassion and
love with Eddie. Be proud of your 'bleeding hearts'.
I am.

Subject: Eddie
Hi-this is Kelly (Ed's sister). He asked
me to e-mail you all and let you know he is in the hospital. The
dr. seems to think he has Kaposi Sarcoma in his bones. Not absolutely
sure yet, but.... He called me at work totally upset and said
he could not drive himself to the hospital.
He is in alot of pain and a call from you
all would probably go a long way in lifting his spirit. So, if
you want to call here's the number
1-270-688-5522.
This number will connect you directly to
his room. He does not like the floor he is on and wants to be
transferred to the 6th floor (he knows the nurses better there)-so
if he is not in that room try info. which is
1-270-688-2000.
God Bless you all and please keep Eddie in
your prayers. If you still can not reach him you are more than
welcome to give me a call at 1-270-729-9981. You should be able
to reach him at 1st number but if you don't check e-mail often-like
me- then.......
Kelly
