Canada Says Legalizing Marijuana Not Imminent

Fri May 3, 5:30 PM ET

QUEBEC CITY (Reuters) - Canada will not move yet to legalize marijuana, Justice Minister Martin Cauchon said on Friday, despite the release of a parliamentary report that said efforts to prevent the drug's consumption are ineffective.

Cauchon said he found the report "interesting", but noted that it was preliminary and that a final report by the Senate, the upper house of Parliament, is expected in August.

"It is a very sensitive and complex issue," he said, adding that the government's priority of the legal front was the fight against child pornography.

The Senate report, released on Thursday, said young Canadians were smoking marijuana in greater numbers than ever and that the laws had little impact on preventing consumption.
