Akha to English Word Book Finished, Thieving
Troops, and Macadamia Expert Sought
Dear Friends:
1. Despite many delays due to border conflict
we have finally finished our 2000 word English To Akha word book
pocket size.
You may get a hand made hand bound copy by
sending a request with your address via E-mail and then a check
for $30 to:
The Akha Heritage Foundation
PO BOX 6073
Salem, OR 97304 USA.
2. Press Repairs: For our other publications
such as the Akha Journal of the Golden Triangle, Akha Intervillage
Journal in Akha Language, Akha Alphabet Lesson Book, we are all
being held up mid- printing due to lacking funds needed to pay
off our press repairs. As soon as we can get the donations to
finish the repair bill we will not only have the Akha Journal
out but will be working on the second edition, plus will be getting
the Akha language Intervillage Journal into Laos, Burma and all
of the more than 300 Akha villages in Thailand and urban communities.
No small feat soon as we get past this delay.
3. We are continuing to work on our coffee
roasting project. We need help and advice on roasting, if anyone
has experience in that area.
4. Despite the fact that the local project
did not come through with the promised plants, working together
with Pah Nmm Akha village we have managed to scavenge over 70,000
coffee plants for the village which has made significant gains
for our attempts to protect the crop lands of this village.
5. The road to the distant fields of Pah
Nmm continues to be worked on, and the planting of coffee has
strengthened this project.
6. The Shan army continues to rob our vegetable
fields at Pah Nmm.
7. The Burmese Army continued to late last
night to have words with the Shans, via heavy artillery dueling
on the Burmese side across from Meh Maw Akha which we could hear
distinctly from where we were working on the road near Pah Nmm.
Since there are no Shan towns in this area we wonder what exactly
the "Shan Army" fights to defend here. The SHAN word
in the area is that the Shan Army is as heavily involved in the
drug trade as anyone else.
8. Hopes and effort continue to go into the
making of an Akha lodge at Pah Nmm in the coffee plantation area.
9. Continuing to seek help for Akha School
Teachers Training Building and Printing Shop at Pah Nmm.
10. Seeking expertise on Macadamia nut tree
grafting and assistance to set up a nursery.
11. Bridge at Maesai is still closed and
we expect that to remain the case for some time to come.
Your generous donation will extensively help
us fulfill our projects to support Akha culture and Akha language
in the villages.
We have made extensive gains in finding protection
for the human rights of the Akha this year. Please help us continue
this work.
